General information about cookie categories
Volkswagen AG, by principle, uses different cookies on its web pages. Cookies are small files containing configuration information and are saved on your computer. Cookies can essentially be divided into three categories.
- Functional cookies are essential for the functionality of the web page. Functional cookies have to be processed to allow you to visit the web page (see Art. 6(1) (b) GDPR).
- Convenience cookies increase the ease of visiting a web page e.g. by saving your language settings. The legal basis for the use of convenience cookies in the sense of Art. 6(1) (f) GDPR is the existence of legitimate interest. The provision of a certain level of convenience when you visit a web page constitutes legitimate interest in this regard. You may object to the data processing with future effect at any time. More information about this can be found in the Privacy Policy.
- Tracking cookies are used to create a pseudonymised user profile. Tracking cookies are only used if the visitor to the web page has provided consent (see Art. 6(1) (a) GDPR). Consent is provided via the cookie banner, which has to be actively clicked to do this.
- More information on the tracking tools used and how you can withdraw consent can be found in the Privacy Policy.
General information about the types of cookies within the categories
Various kinds of cookies are used within the categories described. An explanation of the most frequently used types of cookies is provided in the following for your reference:
- While you are actively using a web page, a session cookie is temporarily stored in your device’s memory. This contains a session ID so, for example, you do not have to log in again every time you switch web pages. Session cookies are deleted when you log off, or cease to be valid as soon as your session has automatically expired.
- A persistent or stored cookie saves a file to your device until the scheduled expiration date. These cookies enable websites to remember your information and settings the next time you visit. This makes it easier and quicker to access the web pages; for example, there is no need to re-adjust the language settings for our portal each time you visit. When the expiry date elapses, the cookies are automatically deleted when you visit the web page that created them.
- Third-party cookies originate from providers other than the operator of the web page. They may be used, for example, to collect information for advertising or to generate custom content and web statistics.
- Flash cookies are stored on your device as data elements of web pages that use Adobe Flash Player. Flash cookies are not time-limited.
